MANILA – Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. on Monday assured the public that the recent earthquakes recorded in different parts of the country are normal occurrences due to the Philippines’ active faults and trenches.
“That’s normal because of active faults and trenches,” Solidum said during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing, noting that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) records at least 30 earthquakes daily.
“So, it’s not unusual that some areas feel strong earthquakes,” he added.
Solidum clarified that the recent tremors in Cebu, Davao, Zambales, and La Union are not connected, as each was generated by different and distant fault systems.
“Their earthquake generators moved differently and are far from each other,” he explained.
Emphasizing the need for preparedness, Solidum urged compliance with the National Building Code, saying structures should be able to withstand intensity VIII shaking.
“Buildings and houses should not collapse even with intensity VIII shaking,” he said.
He also reminded the public that running outside during an earthquake may cause more harm, especially if the building is structurally sound.
“There is no need to run outside if the public is sure about the building’s structural integrity,” Solidum said, explaining that this helps prevent injuries or fatalities caused by falling debris.
He reiterated the importance of practicing the “drop, cover, and hold” method during earthquake drills so people know how to stay safe indoors.
“That’s why we practice drop, cover and hold during earthquake drills, so the people would know where to go inside the establishment during and after an earthquake,” he said.
Solidum also advised the public to prepare an emergency or “go bag,” and to be familiar with evacuation routes and local government assistance protocols. (PNA)
