MANILA – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has issued a Philippine National Standard (PNS) for parol or Philippine-made lanterns, aimed at protecting consumers and elevating the quality of Filipino craftsmanship in the global market.
In a press release on Thursday, the DTI said the PNS was launched in San Fernando, Pampanga, known as the “Home of the Giant Lanterns” and host of the annual Giant Lantern Festival held every December.
The department said the national standards align with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s goal of empowering local industries while ensuring consumer protection.
Developed in partnership with UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE), the new PNS highlights the government’s support for local manufacturers under the Tatak Pinoy initiative.
“More than ensuring product safety, these standards uplift our parol makers whose craftsmanship reflects Filipino pride. By guiding them toward quality and reliability, we empower their businesses to grow and thrive globally while protecting Filipino consumers,” said DTI Secretary Cristina Roque.
DTI Fair Trade Group Assistant Secretary and Supervising Head Lawyer Regino Mallari Jr. said the PNS for Philippine-made lanterns will also help ensure the sustainability of the country’s lantern-making industry. (PNA)
