VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur — The recent series of earthquakes that struck various parts of the country are not connected, but they underscore the importance of strengthening disaster preparedness, the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) said.
Jeffrey Perez, supervising science research specialist of DOST-PHIVOLCS, made the clarification during the Disaster Risk Reduction Information Exhibit and Response Assets Static Display held at Plaza Burgos in Vigan City on October 25, 2025.
The event, organized by DOST-PHIVOLCS, was participated in by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Ilocos, the Department of Education–Schools Division Office of Vigan City, the Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), and the Vigan City DRRMO.
Perez said the activity aimed to promote earthquake preparedness and public awareness amid growing fears caused by recent tremors.
“We are aware that the powerful earthquakes that struck different parts of the country in recent weeks have made many citizens fearful. These incidents show that to be fully prepared, we must strengthen public awareness and information efforts,” Perez said.
The exhibit featured various information materials and emergency response equipment, showcasing each agency’s capability to respond to disasters and emergencies.
Perez emphasized that continuous public education and readiness are key to minimizing the risks posed by natural hazards. (PIA)
