MANILA — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Embassy in Paris, has expressed regret over the disappearance of the bust of Dr. José Rizal, a monument honoring the Philippine national hero and serving as a landmark for the Filipino community in France.
The bust, located at Place José Rizal in Paris’ 9th arrondissement, was reportedly removed overnight between October 25 and 26, 2025. The Embassy has since reported the matter to local authorities and is closely coordinating with them to monitor the progress of the investigation.
The DFA described the monument as a “cherished landmark” for Filipinos in Paris and a symbol of enduring friendship between the Philippines and France.
While the motive for the removal remains unknown, the DFA noted that public monuments are often susceptible to vandalism, destruction, or theft.
The Embassy assured that it continues to work with French authorities and the Filipino community in Paris to explore all avenues for the recovery or replacement of the bust. It reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the memory and values embodied by Dr. Rizal and the monument that honors him.
