ALBAY — Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez has ordered the immediate construction and expansion of a new pier at Pio Duran Port in Albay following the destruction of the existing pier by Super Typhoon Uwan.
During his inspection of the port, Lopez instructed the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to build a new and wider pier along with a road connector, noting that the current pier is no longer usable.
“Kailangang maibalik agad natin ang operasyon nitong port. Importanteng paspasan natin ang pagsasa-gawa ng expanded pier dahil idudugtong na natin ito sa kalsada para maging accessible sa cargo at sa mga pasahero,” Lopez said. He added that the port handles about 30 cargo trucks bound for Masbate, highlighting its importance for both trade and passenger transport.
Lopez said the new pier will significantly benefit residents and passengers, as the port serves as a key center for commerce and local business.
Joining Lopez in the inspection were PPA General Manager Jay Santiago and Pio Duran Mayor Vangie Arandia.
The Secretary also ordered the PPA to construct a Philippine Coast Guard Law Enforcement Building to ensure faster response to maritime emergencies and enhance port security.
