MANILA — The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) has allocated P251 million to compensate insured farmers for damages caused by Typhoon Tino, covering farms across nine regions.

In a report to Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., PCIC President Jovy Bernabe said the agency’s rapid assessment from November 4 to 7 identified 32,247 insured farmers affected by the typhoon. Nearly one-third of them—10,352 farmers—were in Region VIII (Eastern Visayas), which includes Biliran, Leyte, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar, and Southern Leyte.

“The total estimated insurance payment amounts to about P250.6 million,” Bernabe said, noting that damages were valued at P56.7 million for rice, P42.3 million for corn, and P74.3 million for high-value crops. The bulk of assessed damages, amounting to P169.9 million, came from Central Visayas (Region VII), Negros Island Region, and Eastern Visayas.

Bernabe added that PCIC staff have been instructed to continue assisting affected farmers and expedite the processing of claims.

Agriculture Secretary Tiu Laurel said PCIC’s rapid assessment is part of the Department of Agriculture’s broader recovery efforts, which include providing seeds, fingerlings, and feeds to help farmers recover quickly.

“President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is doing everything to ease the burden of Tino’s victims, especially our farmers and fisherfolk,” Tiu Laurel said.

The DA has also activated its Quick Response Fund and Survival and Recovery Loan Program to further support affected farmers and fisherfolk.
