MANILA — Metro bishops urged the public to avoid “extra-constitutional” measures in addressing the country’s problems and to uphold the rule of law.

In a pastoral letter released on November 16, Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula called on the public, including police and military personnel, to remain loyal to the Constitution and democratic principles rather than to individuals or personal ambition.

“We must always adhere to the rule of law and resist any calls for extra-constitutional means to solve our problems,” the pastoral statement read. “Our loyalty must be to our country and its democratic principles, not to persons, and certainly not to ambition.”

Advincula also emphasized that public discussions and gatherings should be guided by reason rather than emotion. He appealed to military and police personnel to uphold their oath to the flag and the country, stressing that fidelity to the Constitution is crucial for national stability and the integrity of democratic institutions.

“The challenges we face demand not just pragmatic solutions but a profound spiritual response. I plead with everyone to examine our consciences, reform our lives, and live according to God’s will,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Cubao Bishop Elias Ayuban sent a letter to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on November 14, expressing support and solidarity with the military in defending democratic institutions.

“We, the clergy, consecrated men and women, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Cubao, wish to express our support and solidarity with you and the men and women of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as you continue to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law,” Ayuban wrote.

The pastoral reminders come as anti-corruption protests are set to begin Sunday, November 16, with Iglesia ni Cristo holding a rally at the Quirino Grandstand until November 18. A nationwide rally similar to the Trillion Peso March in September is also planned for November 30.
