MANILA — The Philippines will host the first International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International High-Level Forum on Nuclear Technology for Controlling Plastic Pollution (NUTEC Plastics) from November 25 to 26, 2025.

Government officials, experts, and industry leaders from over 100 countries will convene to explore partnerships and accelerate the use of nuclear technologies to reduce plastic waste, strengthen recycling systems, and protect marine environments.

The forum will highlight Philippine projects supported by NUTEC Plastics, the IAEA’s flagship initiative addressing global plastic pollution. Among these is the Post-Radiation Reactive Extrusion (PREx) project, which uses radiation processing to transform low-value plastic waste into durable products. The PREx Prototype House demonstrates how upcycled materials can support housing and community needs.

The country is also expanding its capacity to monitor microplastics in coastal waters through IAEA-supported laboratories that follow harmonized global methods, improving understanding of pollution in Philippine seas.

During the forum, organizers will launch the NUTEC Plastics Investment and Partnership Brochure, outlining opportunities for governments, research institutions, and private companies to scale nuclear-enabled recycling, marine monitoring, and sustainable industrial applications. Technical sessions, exhibitions, and focused discussions will provide avenues for partnerships and science-based solutions.

A special session will also highlight how young people are engaging in nuclear solutions to address plastic waste, emphasizing the role of the next generation in environmental stewardship.
