MANILA — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) carried out the 3rd PH–JPN Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) over the weekend in the West Philippine Sea, strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries.

The AFP deployed the BRP Antonio Luna (FF151), a PN AW159 (NH441), and a Philippine Air Force C-208B surveillance aircraft. The JMSDF participated with the JS Harusame (DD102) and an SH-60K helicopter.

During the exercise, both forces conducted interoperability drills, including Division Tactics/Officer of the Watch (DIVTACS/OOW) maneuvers, PHOTOEX formation exercises, and cross-deck landings to enhance coordination in aviation operations.

The activity followed the successful PH–France MCA on 28 November in southern Eastern Mindanao, demonstrating the AFP’s commitment to broadening defense partnerships and maintaining regular engagements with international maritime forces.
