MANILA— The local government of San Juan, in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), began demolition and clearing operations on Wednesday to remove obstructions in drainage systems and reduce flooding in the city.
The initiative follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to intensify cleaning of drainage channels, canals, and rivers under the Oplan Kontra Baha program.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the importance of keeping drainage systems and waterways clear to address waste management and flood prevention in Metro Manila.
“The key here is the cooperation of the city in clearing operations, because many of our drainage systems have been blocked by various structures—including some houses,” Dizon said during the clearing of informal settler families’ (ISFs) structures in Brgy. San Venancio.
President Marcos has previously assured that clearing and demolition operations will continue nationwide as part of ongoing flood mitigation efforts.
Secretary Dizon also noted that the national government will further strengthen collaboration with local government units (LGUs) to tackle flooding issues.
The DPWH thanked San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora for ensuring relocation plans for the eight families affected by the demolition, highlighting the government’s commitment to balancing flood prevention and social welfare.
