MANILA — The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it is closely monitoring the impending deportation of Greggy Valerio Sorio, a detainee at the Northwest ICE Detention Center in the United States.

The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco reported Sorio’s case to the DFA, noting that despite funding for his legal representation through the Legal Assistance Fund, the U.S. Immigration Court has issued an Order for his removal. A recent Application for Stay of Removal was also denied by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Consulate coordinated with officials to ensure Sorio received medical attention for his ulcerative colitis, including hospitalization, follow-up checkups, and medication management. The DFA also requested humanitarian consideration to allow Sorio to substantially recover before deportation, but the ICE Health Services Corps deemed him medically cleared for removal.

“The Department respects this decision and recognizes the sovereign right of the United States to determine who may be allowed to remain in its territory,” the DFA said.

The Department added that it intends to provide Sorio — referred to as “Kuya G” — with necessary assistance upon his arrival in the Philippines. The DFA reiterated its commitment to support Philippine nationals abroad in accordance with international agreements and local laws.
