MANILA — The House of Representatives is preparing for wider deliberations on proposals aimed at curbing political dynasties, with lawmakers eyeing the passage of an appropriate measure as a legislative priority.
Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reform chair and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong said in a press conference Wednesday that preliminary hearings have been set for January 13, 2026, with plans to involve the general public in the discussions.
According to Adiong, the timing is fitting given public clamor. “The public now demands clarity. Saan ba talaga papunta ang bansa natin?” he said. He expressed confidence in the bill’s swift passage, noting that both the majority and minority blocs support the measure.
House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III earlier identified the anti-dynasty bill as among his priority legislative measures, along with the proposal to institutionalize the Independent Commission Against Infrastructure Corruption (ICAIC). President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. likewise included both bills in the priority list discussed during the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting.
Manila Rep. Ernesto Dionisio Jr. said the President’s backing “sends a very strong signal that Malacañang – the President – is really pushing for this. Malaki ang magiging influence niyan sa mga Representatives that there is a big support from the President.”
Dionisio echoed Adiong’s call for a thorough and balanced discussion on defining political dynasties while ensuring democratic openness. “It is high time na magkaroon na nito,” he said.
