MANILA — Actress-host Gabbi Garcia shared on Instagram how her polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has taught her to be kinder to her body, motivating her to maintain an active lifestyle and focus on health rather than appearance.
The “Encantadia” star revealed that she was diagnosed with PCOS in 2018 but initially kept it private. She said she began prioritizing her health and fitness about three years ago, not to achieve a certain body type but to feel strong and healthy.
“I didn’t start working out to chase a certain body. I started because I wanted to feel strong, healthy, and good in my own skin,” Gabbi said.
She candidly acknowledged the physical effects of PCOS, including weight fluctuations, bloating, and changes in facial appearance, but emphasized acceptance and self-care.
“Being ‘sexy’ the way society defines it is honestly the least of my priorities. This journey taught me body positivity in the truest sense. To be kinder to my body, to listen to it, and to appreciate everything it allows me to do. Not perfect. Just better. Still learning. Still showing up,” she said.
Gabbi also encouraged fellow PCOS warriors to be gentle with themselves and remember they are not alone.
PCOS is a hormonal disorder in women that can cause irregular periods, elevated androgen levels, ovarian cysts, and symptoms such as weight gain, acne, and infertility. The condition is manageable through lifestyle changes, medication, and fertility treatments for those who wish to conceive.
Globally, PCOS affects an estimated 6 to 13% of women of reproductive age, with up to 70% remaining undiagnosed, according to the World Health Organization. In the Philippines, around 4.5 million women live with the condition, per UK Research Innovation.
