MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced preparations for the construction of a detour bridge following the collapse of the Cabagan–Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela.

DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said clearing operations are currently ongoing and that construction work will commence immediately afterward, with completion expected by March 2026.

Last week, Dizon led an inspection of the damaged structure to identify the most effective solution for its prompt repair, following a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to expedite clearing operations.

“The completion of this project is crucial to ease the daily commute of residents, who currently have to rely on boats to cross between Cabagan and Santa Maria,” Dizon said.

The bridge, which connects the towns of Cabagan and Sta. Maria, had only recently been completed on February 1, 2025, at a cost of PHP1.22 billion. A section collapsed on February 27 after a loaded dump truck, exceeding the 45-ton weight limit, attempted to cross, injuring at least six people and damaging several vehicles.
