MANILA — Three drag queens with Filipino heritage — Minty Fresh, Melinda Verga, and Zahirah Zapanta — are set to compete on the third season of “Drag Race UK vs. The World,” the international all-stars edition of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.”
Minty Fresh, who finished fifth on the inaugural season of “Drag Race Philippines,” described her appearance on the new season as a chance to reclaim her spot in a finale she narrowly missed. “Filipino drag is drag excellence,” Minty said, vowing to avenge fellow Filipina contestant Marina Summers. “I’m very strategic. But it’s a secret, don’t tell anyone, okay? ‘Cause it’s nice to be a silent killer sometimes.”
Filipino-Canadian Melinda, Manila-born and also a fifth-place finisher on Season 4 of “Canada’s Drag Race,” won the Snatch Game challenge impersonating Manny Pacquiao. She previously co-hosted “Binge Queens” for “Drag Race Philippines: Slaysian Royale” and competed on the second season of “The Traitors Canada.” Melinda called herself an “international, universal, intergalactic phenomenon” and acknowledged her messy, dramatic tendencies, citing her experience on “Traitors” as license to backstab and manipulate competitors.
Zahirah, born in Bulacan and raised in Nottingham, England, finished 10th on Season 6 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.” She said she may be “louder and more annoying” than during her previous outing. “I’m a Brit-Filipino so I will be welcoming all of my international sisters before I send them home,” she said, citing beauty as her strength.
The other contestants for the season include Fontana (“Drag Race Sverige” runner-up), Gawdland (“Drag Race Thailand” Season 3 third-place finisher), Kate Butch (“Drag Race UK” Season 5 fifth-place finisher), Mariah Balenciaga (“Drag Race” Season 3 ninth-place finisher and “Drag Race All Stars” Season 5 eighth-place finisher), Serena Morena (“Drag Race Mexico” Season 1 eighth-place finisher), Sminty Drop (“Drag Race UK” Season 4 ninth-place finisher), and The Only Naomy (“Drag Race Germany” tenth-place finisher).
Season 3 of “Drag Race UK vs. The World” premieres on WOW Presents Plus on January 27. Producer World of Wonder released “Meet the Queens” videos for each contestant, themed as a newsroom, introducing their personalities and drag styles.
