SURIGAO DEL NORTE — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is monitoring the Philippine-flagged motor tanker MT Cheng Xian Feng 168, which ran aground along the shoreline of Barangay Poblacion 1, Burgos, Surigao del Norte on January 11, 2026.

PCG Spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said no oil spill was observed at the site, but technical assessments are ongoing, including checks for possible hull breaches to protect the marine environment.

“At approximately 4:30 a.m., joint authorities ensured the safety of nine Filipino crew members, including the master, who were brought ashore for further assistance and investigation. All crew members were in good physical condition and did not sustain any injuries,” Captain Cayabyab said.

Initial investigation showed that MT Cheng Xian Feng 168, with 712 gross tonnage, departed from Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, en route to Homonhon, Leyte. The vessel experienced engine trouble around 1 p.m. on January 10, prompting the master to anchor.

Strong currents and heavy waves caused the tanker to drift and run aground. The vessel was carrying approximately 3,500 liters of diesel fuel for onboard consumption.

At around 7:50 a.m. on January 11, the PCG coordinated towing operations for the aground vessel, with arrangements made in coordination with the tanker’s company.
