MANILA — Two senior officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) are under investigation for alleged irregularities in the procurement of fire extinguishers worth P30 million for a condominium building, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, in an interview over Bilyonaryo News Channel’s Politiko Talks on Friday, said he dismissed the two officials involved in the reported anomalous transaction. He did not disclose their names but said they were assigned to the BFP’s National Capital Region office and the Quezon City fire district.

Remulla earlier described the BFP as the “most corrupt” attached agency of the DILG, citing officials involved in illegal activities such as selling fire extinguishers to commercial establishments at inflated prices. “They sell them at three times the original cost,” he said.

He also noted that some BFP inspectors force business owners to hire specific contractors for the installation of sprinklers in exchange for commissions.

To prevent further abuse, Remulla said fire safety inspectors will be required to wear body-worn cameras to record their activities.
