MANILA — Host, model, and former Miss Universe Philippines Rabiya Mateo revealed she was diagnosed with depression last year, sharing her experience to raise awareness about mental health.

In a Facebook post, Rabiya posted a January 2025 medical certificate from psychiatrist Dr. Regine Anne Oscuro. The certificate indicated that, at age 28, Rabiya displayed symptoms consistent with Major Depressive Disorder with Anxious Distress. She was advised to take prescribed medication, schedule follow-up appointments, and temporarily step away from professional duties to stabilize her condition.

“Everyday was a struggle to survive. I almost deactivated everything and disappear to have a quiet and peaceful life. I fought hard and still fighting up until now,” Rabiya wrote, emphasizing the challenges she faced following her diagnosis. She spent three months away from the Philippines to avoid situations that could trigger her symptoms.

Rabiya also reflected on the passing of Emman Atienza, another public figure who shared her mental health struggles, saying it motivated her to persevere. “I made a promise to myself to never give up because I don’t want my Mama to experience the same thing,” she said. “You don’t know how little kindness mean to a depressed person like me and how your words can push me to do something else.”

The beauty queen shared the certificate after receiving online criticism following a post asking for restaurant recommendations in her home province of Iloilo. She highlighted the impact of words on mental health, urging the public to practice kindness.

Rabiya made history as the first woman to represent the Philippines at Miss Universe under the Miss Universe Philippines organization, finishing in the Top 21 while Andrea Meza of Mexico won the crown. After her reign, Rabiya began her acting and hosting career with GMA Network.
