MANILA – Beep announced the removal of all Stored Value Updaters (SVUs) and Express Renewal Devices (ERDs) from rail stations, citing outdated technology.

In a Facebook post, the operator of the Beep Card said the SVUs and ERDs rely on 3G technology, which is no longer supported.

Commuters can still use the Beep app to check their card balance. If a phone is NFC-enabled, users can tap their cards onto their devices to check balances or retrieve load transactions.

The Beep Card can also continue to be used at regular ticket vending machines (TVMs) or with station tellers.

The Department of Transportation clarified that Beep Cards remain valid and commuters can use TVMs for transactions.

The SVUs and ERDs are expected to be returned within the first quarter of the year, the agency added.
