MANILA – Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said so-called threats to Senate leadership have existed “since time immemorial,” amid renewed speculation online about a possible leadership change in the chamber.

Lacson made the remark after social media posts over the weekend hinted at a shake-up in the Senate leadership, supposedly due to “dissatisfaction” with the current leadership under Senate President Vicente Sotto III.

“An emerging threat to the Senate leadership? Let’s put it this way – like rebellion, the threat against the Senate presidency is a ‘continuing crime’ since time immemorial,” Lacson said on X.

Over the weekend, several social media posts claimed there would be a leadership change in the Senate, with some members of the majority allegedly switching sides.

Lacson recalled that similar rumors surfaced in October last year, which he dismissed at the time as an “old rehashed psywar tactic” meant to “confuse and sow intrigue” among members of the Senate majority.
