MANILA—The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reminded the public on Wednesday that damaging Philippine coins, including commemorative issues, is illegal and punishable under the law.

Under Presidential Decree No. 247, it is unlawful to willfully deface, mutilate, tear, burn, or destroy currency issued by the BSP. Violators may face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to ₱20,000.

The BSP noted that coins are meant for everyday transactions, while commemorative coins celebrate significant events, landmarks, and the legacies of notable Filipinos.

The central bank urged citizens to handle coins responsibly and use them only for their intended purpose to protect the integrity of the country’s currency.
