MANILA — The Bureau of Customs has warned overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to be cautious of syndicates offering jobs or free “tours” abroad that may be used to smuggle illegal drugs into the Philippines.
The bureau advised Filipinos working overseas to verify that recruiters and employers are legitimate and accredited, carefully check all travel documents and arrangements, and never allow anyone to place items in their luggage or carry another person’s belongings.
“Contact the Department of Migrant Workers and the BOC if you find anything suspicious in your luggage or if you fall victim to this modus to provide immediate assistance and avoid a threat to your security,” the bureau said.
The warning comes amid reports of syndicates exploiting OFWs to transport illegal substances under the guise of employment or travel opportunities.
