MANILA—Senator Raffy Tulfo denounced the Boss Ironman Endurance Challenge, citing numerous traffic violations and accidents involving its participants.
During a hearing of the Senate Committee on Tourism, which Tulfo chairs under the Committee on Public Services, he presented videos showing riders running red lights, counterflowing, and engaging in other behaviors that endangered public safety.
“I’m sick and tired kasi maraming pumupuntang pobreng namamasadang tricycle drivers sa akin inirereklamo kapag sila huhulihin at tinitiketan sa red light pero yung mga participants binabastos yung mga batas trapiko. Dahil ba BOSS Ironman kayo libre na kayo sa ticket? Hindi dapat!,” Tulfo said.
The senator questioned whether event organizers properly assess participants’ skills and knowledge of traffic rules and motorcycle safety before allowing them to join.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of motorcycle tourism in promoting local economies, Tulfo stressed that no life should ever be put at risk.
“Wala akong problema kung ang pagmomotorsiklo ay nakakatulong upang umangat ang ating turismo at makatulong kayo sa kapwa kahit barya-barya lang ang ibinibigay niyong charity, ang kaso, marami nang namamatay, nasusugatan at napeperwisyo sa kalsada,” the senator from Isabela and Davao said.
Tulfo also noted reports indicating that the endurance ride is allegedly conducted as a race, with betting reportedly involved and even some politicians participating. He emphasized that racing should occur only in designated venues, away from the public, and with strict safety measures in place.
Citing data from the Tourism Promotions Board showing that 93 motorcycle tourism events generated P1.9 billion in revenue, Tulfo stressed that organizers must strengthen safety policies to prevent accidents in future challenges.
He also questioned why the Boss Ironman event continued despite a congressional hearing on the same concerns in 2024 and opposed its continuation unless proper safety mechanisms are implemented.
“I will not alllow you. I’ll do everything in my power, legally, LTO, PNP-HPG, DOTr na ipatigil kayo hangga’t hindi kayo makapagpakita ng napakagandang guidelines o programa para matiyak na wala na muling maaksidente,” Tulfo said.
Tulfo further criticized the event’s charity claims, pointing out that organizers reportedly distribute minimal assistance despite generating millions in revenue. He cited an event that earned approximately P15 million, suggesting that its charitable activities serve mainly to mask commercial interests.
