MANILA — Malabon City lone district Rep. Antolin “Lenlen” Oreta III has called attention to the growing problem of obesity in the Philippines, describing it as a public concern that affects families across all ages and income levels.
“Obesity is no longer just a personal health issue—it is a growing public concern that affects Filipino families across all ages, income levels, and communities,” Oreta said in a statement.
He noted that unhealthy eating habits, from children consuming ultra-processed snacks to adults exceeding daily sugar, salt, and fat intake, are often driven by a lack of clear information rather than personal choice.
Oreta earlier filed House Bill (HB) No. 6147, or the proposed Healthy Food Environment Act, which includes the adoption of Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labels (FOPNL) on food products.
Through the measure, Oreta champions the principle: “Malinaw na label, mas malusog na pamilya” (A clear label will result in healthier families). He emphasized that food labels are meant to guide consumers, but many products feature technical terms, fine print, or misleading claims that make it difficult for ordinary Filipinos to understand what they are eating.
“When labels are unclear, families—especially parents buying food for their children—are left guessing,” said Oreta, a member of the House Committee on the Welfare of Children.
He added that clear food product labels do not restrict choices or burden consumers, but rather respect the Filipino family’s right to know. “When people understand what is in their food, they are more likely to choose better—not because they are forced to, but because they are informed,” Oreta said.
