MANILA — The Department of National Defense has not received any reports of an alleged coup plot, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said.
“Wala (Nothing),” Teodoro said in an ambush interview when asked about circulating social media claims of supposed “coup plotters” and a so-called “Third Force” allegedly planning to overthrow the government.
He urged individuals making such claims to formally submit evidence to authorities.
“Alam niyo, as responsible citizens, why don’t they execute the proper affidavit and file it with the law enforcement and prosecutorial officials? So it can be investigated properly kung meron talagang ebidensya,” Teodoro said.
Earlier, the Armed Forces of the Philippines dismissed the circulating posts, saying it does not act on unverified information.
AFP public affairs office chief Colonel Xerxes Trinidad said the military “does not dignify unvalidated social media posts.”
“The AFP remains focused on its constitutional mandate and the faithful performance of its duty as protector of the people and the State,” he said.
The Manila Police District also clarified that the increased police presence near Malacañang was part of routine security measures ahead of expected rallies.
Trinidad called on the public to remain cautious and avoid spreading unverified information.
“At a time when our nation must remain united in addressing the possible effects of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, we call on all Filipinos to exercise sobriety, reject disinformation, and refrain from spreading unverified claims that may cause confusion and division,” he said.
“The AFP is a professional organization that upholds the Constitution, respects the chain of command, and remains steadfast in its duty to defend Philippine sovereignty, protect the people, and uphold the rule of law,” he added.
