MANILA — Local government units (LGUs) nationwide have been urged to reduce their electricity and fuel consumption by 10% to 20%, the Department of the Interior and Local Government said.
The call comes after the DILG issued Memorandum Circular No. 2026-023 on Monday, March 16, introducing stricter energy conservation measures in response to rising fuel prices triggered by tensions in the Middle East.
“LGUs can lead by example by adopting simple but effective measures that reduce electricity and fuel consumption,” the agency said in a statement. “Even small adjustments in daily operations can make a significant difference in achieving our goal of cutting energy use by as much as 20 percent.”
Among the recommended measures, the DILG encouraged:
- A four-day onsite work arrangement through compressed workweeks or a common work-from-home day to lower electricity use in offices.
- Maximizing virtual platforms for meetings, seminars, and workshops, unless physical presence is legally or operationally necessary.
- Limiting official travel to essential functions and improving fleet efficiency for government vehicles.
- Setting air conditioners to 24°C and turning off lights and equipment when not in use.
The DILG emphasized that these energy-saving efforts must not disrupt essential government services, particularly those related to health, public safety, and emergency response.
“These measures are intended to help the government manage energy resources responsibly while ensuring uninterrupted service to the public,” the statement added.
