MANILA — Actress Janine Gutierrez expressed support for fellow actress Anne Curtis, commending her for speaking out against misogyny following a controversial remark from a lawmaker.
Curtis earlier drew attention after releasing a statement condemning a congressman’s lewd comment about her, made during a House justice panel hearing. The remark, which alluded to sexual acts, sparked backlash from women’s rights groups, celebrities, and fellow lawmakers.
In her statement, Curtis described the incident as a reflection of persistent sexism, saying the country’s observance of Women’s Month highlights “how far we still have to go.”
“It happens to women every day… in offices, in group chats, in rooms where men think no one is listening, or worse, in rooms where they know everyone is and simply don’t care,” she said.
Speaking to reporters, Gutierrez called the incident “hindi katanggap-tanggap” and praised Curtis for using her platform to speak on behalf of women who experience similar situations.
“I applaud Anne for really speaking up against it… she really used her platform para magsalita on behalf of all the women who experience these things every day,” Gutierrez said.
She added that Curtis has the support of many in pushing for women’s empowerment across industries and social backgrounds.
Gutierrez also described the lawmaker’s remarks as “nakakagalit” and “kadiri,” particularly because they came from a public official, and expressed hope that the issue would serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and respect.
The actress urged the public to speak up against inappropriate behavior, even within their own circles, emphasizing that advocacy can begin with small actions.
For Gutierrez, the controversy underscores the continued relevance of Women’s Month, especially in raising awareness and educating younger generations about respect and gender equality.
