MANILA – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) reported that several public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers tested positive for illegal drugs during surprise screenings conducted nationwide amid the Holy Week travel rush.
In Western Visayas, PDEA said 822 drivers were subjected to random drug testing on the first day of Oplan Harabas, with six testing positive. On Holy Wednesday, 607 additional drivers were screened, and two taxi drivers initially tested positive for methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu.
In Bicol, 172 PUV drivers and conductors underwent testing, with three drivers—including a bus driver and two tricycle drivers—yielding positive results for shabu.
Meanwhile, in Eastern Visayas, 152 drivers and conductors were screened, and three drivers tested positive for illegal drugs.
In Zamboanga Peninsula, authorities conducted large-scale testing involving 1,286 drivers across several areas, with 19 individuals testing positive.
PDEA said those who initially tested positive will undergo confirmatory testing and appropriate legal proceedings. They have also been given initial counseling and referred to local health offices for further intervention, including possible treatment and rehabilitation.
The agency added that individuals who are confirmed positive will be endorsed to local anti-drug abuse councils for monitoring and intervention.
Administrative sanctions may also be imposed by the Land Transportation Office, including the suspension or revocation of driver’s licenses.
