MANILA — Cardinal Jose Advincula called on clergy and the faithful to include an additional intention for world peace during Good Friday observances.
In Circular No. 2026 – 38, Advincula cited Paschalis Solemnitatis, which allows a diocesan bishop to prescribe special intentions “in case of grave public necessity.”
The appeal responds to Pope Leo XVI’s call to pray to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. The Pope, in his Palm Sunday Angelus message, urged prayers for Christians in the Middle East, many of whom are enduring conflict and unable to fully observe Holy Week liturgies.
“Just as the Church contemplates the mystery of the Lord’s Passion, we cannot forget those who today are truly sharing in his suffering. Their ordeal challenges all our consciences,” Advincula said.
The prayer for world peace reads in part:
“Let us pray for peace throughout the world, especially in regions torn by conflict, that God, in His mercy, may dispel violence, cleanse hearts of greed and the abuse of power, and restore harmony among nations… Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
Advincula encouraged the faithful to unite in prayer at the foot of the Cross, invoking the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows for peace through Christ’s sacrifice.
