MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang appears uninterested in getting involved in the legal troubles surrounding Vice President Sara Duterte, opting instead to let the legal process play out.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin made it clear that the Palace would keep its distance from the grave threats and inciting to sedition charges Duterte is facing.
“We are aware of that, but we are going to let the process proceed on its own,” Bersamin said.
He emphasized that the Department of Justice (DOJ) would have “the fullest autonomy” in handling the case, the PNA report said.
“We cannot give directions as far as these matters go,” he added.
“We will leave that into the hands of the investigators. This process will go through the full course,” the former chief magistrate continued.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) formally filed the charges against Duterte before the DOJ on Wednesday.
The case stems from Duterte’s eyebrow-raising claim that she had hired someone to assassinate President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez—just in case an alleged plot to kill her succeeded.
