
MANILA, Philippines—President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. departed for Malaysia on Sunday to participate in the 46th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, where he will reaffirm the Philippines’ commitment to regional cooperation and development.
In a brief message during the send-off ceremony at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, Marcos said the country’s participation in the summit underscores its dedication to advancing the welfare of Filipinos and the broader Southeast Asian community.
The summit, themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” will focus on regional progress and resilience. Marcos expressed full support for Malaysia’s chairmanship and its vision for ASEAN’s development.
The President is set to join ASEAN leaders in discussions on key regional and global challenges, including tensions in the South China Sea, the crisis in Myanmar, maritime security, climate change, economic volatility, and digital disruption.
Marcos said he will also push for the creation of an ethical and responsible framework for artificial intelligence (AI) within the ASEAN region, aligning with the Philippines’ goal of building a competitive, people-centered, and sustainable community.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), 22 outcome documents are expected from the summit, including the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN Vision 2045 and joint statements from the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.
Marcos will also participate in nine leaders’ engagements and several bilateral meetings. He will attend sessions with the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, youth representatives, and parliamentarians. He will also chair the 16th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit.
