MANILA, Philippines— The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a suspect in the 2020 murder of Cebu-based lawyer Joey Luis Wee at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the agency said in a statement.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago said operatives from the bureau’s International Airport Investigation Division (IAID) apprehended Manuelito Melia Camacho, also known as “Monching,” who is facing a murder charge in connection with the daylight ambush of Wee in Cebu City on November 23, 2020.
Camacho was initially detained by the Airport Police’s Police Intelligence and Investigation Division (PIID) under the name Jay-R Reyes y Santos for separate charges of theft, unjust vexation, and resistance and disobedience to a person in authority. During his detention, a confrontation with a partner led to the revelation of his true identity.
A record check confirmed that Camacho had an outstanding warrant of arrest issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 10 in Cebu City for Wee’s murder. The Cebu District Office (CEBDO) of the NBI, which investigated the case, positively identified Camacho as the suspect.
The IAID served the arrest warrant at the PIID office in Pasay City, where Camacho admitted to being the same person named in the warrant.
Wee, 51, was gunned down by two assailants while walking to his office in Barangay Kasambagan, Cebu City, in an attack that drew strong condemnation from the legal community.
