MANILA — The International Criminal Court Appeals Chamber is scheduled to announce its judgment on the challenge filed by former President Rodrigo Duterte’s camp regarding the prosecutor’s jurisdiction over his case.
The ruling will be delivered on April 22 at 7 p.m. Manila time by Presiding Judge Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza, along with Judges Tomoko Akane, Solomy Balungi Bossa, Gocha Lordkipanidze, and Erdenebalsuren Damdin.
On October 23, 2025, the Appeals Chamber initially rejected Duterte’s challenge against the ICC prosecutor’s jurisdiction, citing the Philippines’ withdrawal from the Rome Statute. Prosecutors, however, maintained that the ICC retains jurisdiction because the alleged crimes against humanity occurred while the Philippines was still a signatory.
Duterte’s defense team filed a Notice of Appeal five days later, submitting their Appeal Brief on Jurisdiction on November 14, 2025.
The former president now faces crimes against humanity charges at the Hague, following the ICC judges’ confirmation of the case in February 2026.
