BANGKOK – Thailand will reduce the visa-free stay period for tourists from 93 countries from 60 days to 30 days in a move aimed at preventing criminal activity, the foreign minister said.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaeow said on Tuesday that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will submit a proposal to the Cabinet for approval to shorten the visa-free stay period to 30 days, although he did not specify when the change would take effect.

Thailand has allowed visa-free entry for citizens of 93 countries since July 2024.

Authorities said the policy adjustment is intended to address concerns over the misuse of extended stays and the involvement of some foreign visitors in illegal activities.

The government will also review other visa categories to ensure compliance with the declared purpose of entry.

From January 1 to May 10, 2026, Thailand received 12.4 million foreign tourists, a 3.43% decline compared with the same period last year.

Tourism remains a key driver of the Thai economy, with international arrivals peaking at nearly 40 million in 2019. — Reuters
