THE HAGUE — Former president Rodrigo Duterte is under cell monitoring due to his status as an elderly detained person with an increased risk of falling because of his age and chronic physical ailments, the International Criminal Court (ICC) Registry said.

In a media report, the ICC Registry said a 7-page document dated May 20 noted that Duterte has not experienced any fall in the past 30 days. It added that it could not disclose details of his chronic conditions due to confidentiality rules.

“Regarding his loss of balance, the [medical officer] and Mr. Duterte’s medical specialists are responsible for assessments that are on a medical level,” it said.

“From the perspective of management and operational security, Mr. Duterte’s movements are consistent with his age and mobility,” it added.

The Registry earlier said that on “rare occasions” when he had fallen, ICC detention custody staff immediately assisted him and requested medical assessment.

It added that following such incidents, adjustments were made to his cell “to better accommodate his comfort and movement,” with further modifications made as needed.

The ICC Registry also said ergonomic adjustments were made to the placement of items in his cell and visiting areas to support safer and more stable movement.

“The Registry recalls that the medical record is available to Mr Duterte and therefore his Defence team, and the continual medical care of Mr Duterte remains assured and under constant attention,” it said.

Duterte is currently detained at The Hague on charges of crimes against humanity for murder and attempted murder in connection with alleged killings during his tenure as Davao City mayor and later as president. He has denied the allegations.
