Amazon MGM Studios has approved the production of its first three children’s television shows developed under a new artificial intelligence (AI) initiative aimed at accelerating content creation.

The projects were developed under the company’s GenAI Creators Fund, which provides support to filmmakers, digital creators, and startups that use AI tools to speed up production timelines.

According to director Jorge Gutierrez, who is behind the animated series “Punky Duck,” the project was approved in a significantly shorter time compared to traditional development cycles.

“The best way I can describe it is, it’s like you have sex and then someone hands you the baby,” Gutierrez said at the annual AI on the Lot Conference, where early images of the approved animated series were presented. “It’s pretty crazy.”

Two additional projects were also greenlit within a similar timeframe: “Diana Music Hunters” by Albie Hecht and “Cupcake & Friends” from Buzzfeed Studios, reflecting what the company described as a faster development approach enabled by AI tools.

The move comes as Hollywood labor unions and creative workers continue to express concern over the growing use of artificial intelligence in film and television production, warning that it could replace human jobs with digital replicas.

Amazon MGM Studios AI chief Albert Cheng said at the conference that the technology is not intended to eliminate employment but to reduce costs and shorten production timelines, allowing for more projects to be produced.

However, Cheng also acknowledged the risks of overreliance on the technology, saying “AI is addictive,” and cautioning that humans must ensure they do not “succumb and let our brains go to waste.”
