MANILA — Former overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso is scheduled to testify on June 19 inside the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, according to a court order.
In a report, it said that the Mandaluyong City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 210 will take Veloso’s testimony within the CIW, where she remains detained following her transfer to the Philippines in 2024 from Indonesia, where she was previously convicted of drug trafficking.
Veloso is set to testify against alleged illegal recruiter Maria Cristina Sergi and others in cases involving qualified trafficking in persons, estafa, and violations of Republic Act No. 8042 or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act.
Although the cases are being heard by the RTC in Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija, the Supreme Court allowed the testimony to be conducted inside the CIW due to Veloso’s detention.
“Immediately after the conduct of hearing, compliance will be made as to the directive to cause the immediate return of the case records to Regional Trial Court, Branch 89, Baloc, Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija, including transcripts of stenographic notes of the entire hearing after the examination of the aforesaid private complainant,” Presiding Judge Benedict Pichay III said in an order dated June 2, 2026.
The court also directed the CIW to prepare a suitable room for the proceedings that can accommodate court personnel, parties, and lawyers.
“Upon receipt of this Order, for the CIW to know who will be allowed within their premises, the counsels are directed to inform this court and the CIW before the said hearing date for such purpose,” the court said.
It added that Veloso’s testimony must be completed within a single day, in accordance with the One-Day Examination of Witness Rule.
