MANILA — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has reminded police personnel, including those active as online content creators, to remain politically neutral and focus on their mandate of maintaining peace and order amid growing political tensions in the country.

In a news release over the weekend, Nartatez emphasized that law enforcement officers should avoid engaging in political matters.

“We have no business involving ourselves in politics. We do not have that privilege, that is not part of our mandate. Let us focus on what we are trained for and what the Filipino people expect us to do: Enforce the law and maintain peace and order,” Nartatez said.

Following directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, he also called on PNP personnel to exercise discipline and restraint in their use of social media and digital platforms.

Nartatez said the current political environment, marked by debates among lawmakers and online commentators, has placed police presence and perspectives under increased scrutiny.

While acknowledging the right of individuals to express personal views, he stressed that police officers do not have the same liberty to publicly voice political opinions, saying doing so could implicate the entire organization.

He also urged the public to exercise caution and responsibility in consuming information circulating online.

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center earlier warned against misinformation, disinformation, and unverified content, saying these could mislead the public, heighten tensions, and contribute to confusion during a period of heightened political conflict.
