
MANILA — A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck waters off Sarangani on Monday morning, with strong shaking felt across parts of Mindanao, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
In its Earthquake Information No. 2 bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the quake occurred at 7:37 a.m. and was located about 32 kilometers south 4 degrees west of Maasim, Sarangani, at a depth of 33 kilometers.
PHIVOLCS reported Intensity VII in General Santos City.
Intensity VI was recorded in Palimbang and Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat.
Intensity V was felt in Davao City; Kidapawan City and Carmen in Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Kalamansig, and President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat; and Sibuco and Siocon in Zamboanga del Norte.
Intensity IV was reported in Mati City, Davao Oriental; Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay; and Caraga, Manay, and Tarragona in Davao Oriental.
Intensity III was recorded in Butuan City; Mainit, Surigao del Norte; Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte; and Kumalarang and Vincenzo Sagun in Zamboanga del Sur.
Intensity II was reported in Dipolog City, Labason, Liloy, President Manuel A. Roxas, and Salug in Zamboanga del Norte; Alicia, Ipil, Mabuhay, Olutanga, and Siay in Zamboanga Sibugay; Molave, Zamboanga del Sur; Abuyog and Dulag in Leyte; and San Francisco in Southern Leyte.
PHIVOLCS also released instrumental intensity readings, with Intensity VIII recorded in Malapatan, Sarangani.
Instrumental Intensity VII was observed in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental.
Instrumental Intensity VI was recorded in General Santos City and T’boli, South Cotabato.
Other areas in Mindanao registered instrumental intensities ranging from V to I.
PHIVOLCS continues to monitor the situation following the strong earthquake.
