MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has arrested a 26-year-old online seller in Cabanatuan City for her alleged involvement in an online paluwagan scheme that reportedly defrauded several individuals, including a member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The arrest was carried out on June 7 by the Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office under the leadership of PNP chief PGen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr.

Police investigators said the suspect allegedly invited individuals to join an online paluwagan arrangement, offering scheduled payouts and financial returns in exchange for monetary contributions.

Authorities said participants later complained after they failed to receive the promised payouts when these became due, prompting the filing of complaints against the suspect.

Among those who allegedly invested in the scheme were an AFP personnel, business owners, an online seller, and a student.

Initial findings showed that total investments reached P6.165 million, while expected payouts that remain unpaid amounted to P1.13 million.

Following her arrest, the suspect was taken to the Cabanatuan City Police Station for documentation and further processing. Police said charges for estafa and other possible violations are being prepared for filing before the Office of the Prosecutor.

The PNP said the operation forms part of its efforts to combat online financial fraud and strengthen law enforcement actions against individuals involved in illegal investment schemes.

“The PNP will not tolerate individuals who use digital platforms to deceive and exploit the public. We are intensifying efforts to hold scammers accountable and ensure that justice is served for victims of fraud,” Nartatez said.

“Pinaaalalahanan natin ang publiko—huwag magtiwala agad sa online investment na walang sapat na beripikasyon. Ingatan ang pinaghirapang pera,” he added.

The PNP said it will continue its campaign against online investment fraud in line with government efforts to address scams conducted through digital platforms.
