MANILA — The Philippines has launched a new export shipment of Guimaras mangoes to Europe and Hong Kong as part of efforts to expand the international market for one of the country’s most sought-after fruit products and generate additional opportunities for local growers.
A total of 200 kilograms of fresh mangoes from Kokomojo Mango Farm in Sibunag, Guimaras were scheduled for export on June 9, with 50 kilograms destined for the Netherlands, 50 kilograms for Belgium, and 100 kilograms for Hong Kong.
The shipments to Belgium and the Netherlands will serve as promotional exports aimed at introducing Guimaras mangoes to potential buyers and industry stakeholders in Europe, where demand for premium tropical fruits continues to increase. Brussels will serve as the entry point for the European market.
Meanwhile, the shipment to Hong Kong will be distributed to diplomats and invited guests during activities commemorating the 127th Philippine Independence Day.
The export program received support from the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), which provided technical assistance and regulatory services to help ensure compliance with international food safety and plant health standards.
The agency’s Guimaras National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center assisted farmers in adopting production technologies and good agricultural practices. The Plant Product Safety Services Division also conducted maximum residue limit testing to verify compliance with pesticide regulations imposed by importing countries.
In addition, the National Plant Quarantine Services Division facilitated the issuance of export permits and phytosanitary certificates, which are required for international market access and certify that exported products are free from regulated quarantine pests.
The mangoes came from the PhilGAP-certified Kokomojo Mango Farm, highlighting the role of farm certification in meeting export requirements and accessing higher-value markets.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said the government is pursuing efforts to open more overseas markets for Philippine agricultural products to help increase earnings for farmers and support employment across the agriculture sector.
“Every new export market we open creates opportunities not only for our farmers but also for workers involved in processing, logistics, packaging, and distribution. Expanding market access allows our producers to secure better prices, increase incomes, and invest in improving productivity, helping drive inclusive growth in rural communities,” Tiu Laurel said.
The shipment forms part of broader government efforts to diversify agricultural exports beyond traditional destinations. Authorities said initiatives focused on quality assurance, traceability, and science-based regulations are intended to strengthen the competitiveness of Philippine fruits in premium international markets.
The BPI said the export shipment reflects growing recognition of Philippine produce abroad and highlights the importance of cooperation among farmers, exporters, and government agencies in developing new market opportunities.
Officials said the latest export of Guimaras mangoes marks another step in expanding the product’s presence overseas and converting international demand into greater returns for local producers.
