CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija — A missing transwoman was found dead inside an irrigation canal in Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija on Friday afternoon, June 19, police said.

Initial investigation showed that the victim was discovered by a farmer floating face down in the middle of the canal. The farmer later reported the incident to authorities.

Police said follow-up investigation indicated that the victim had been missing for several days before her body was recovered.

Law enforcement officials have since obtained closed-circuit television footage and other pieces of evidence to trace the victim’s movements prior to her disappearance.

Authorities said they have identified a person of interest in the killing. Netizens have also called for justice for the victim.

The Society of Trans Women of the Philippines (Society of Trans Women of the Philippines) issued a statement expressing grief and concern over the killing, which it said underscores ongoing violence against transgender individuals.

The group identified the victim as Bella Lutap, 20, a trans woman from Nueva Ecija, who had been missing for nearly three days before her body was found.

Her body was reportedly discovered in an irrigation area, naked, covered with a sack of rice and rocks, and in a condition that made her difficult to recognize. She was last seen with her ex-boyfriend, according to the group, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of her death.

STRAP said the incident highlights continuing violence faced by transgender people, especially during Pride Month, and called for justice, accountability, and protection for the community.

The group also cited other transgender individuals who were previously killed, stressing that the case is not isolated and urging a thorough investigation into Bella’s death.

Authorities have yet to release further details as investigations continue.
