MANILA — National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag challenged former congressman Mike Defensor to provide evidence supporting allegations that his wife is involved in the alleged flood control controversy.
Speaking at a press briefing, Matibag responded to Defensor’s claim that he was unwilling to investigate supposed irregularities in flood control projects because they allegedly involved his wife, Laguna 1st District Rep. Ann Matibag.
“If he has evidence, he should file a case against my wife,” Matibag said.
The NBI director also urged Defensor to file charges against him if he believes the bureau is unfairly targeting or harassing his family.
“Kasuhan niya rin ako kung naniniwala siyang ginigipit siya ng NBI (He should file a complaint against me if he feels he is being politically persecuted,” Matibag said.
Meanwhile, Matibag maintained that authorities have substantial evidence linking Defensor to alleged human trafficking activities at the Chicago KTV Bar and the Bleu Hotel, a property owned by the former lawmaker’s family.
According to the NBI, a raid conducted at the Chicago KTV Bar on April 21 resulted in the rescue of 54 female victims.
Matibag also dismissed Defensor’s criticisms and said the former congressman had failed to address the evidence presented against him.
“Madaling sabihin ang ‘tanga’ at ‘bobo’ kapag wala nang maipakitang sagot sa malinaw na ebidensya,” Matibag said.
“Ang nakikita kong katangahan at kabobohan ay idinamay ang sariling pamilya sa ilegal na gawain (The stupidity is including one’s family in illegal activities),” he added.
On Wednesday, Matibag announced that the NBI would file qualified human trafficking charges against Defensor.
