MANILA — The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) is verifying reports that eight people died due to the combined effects of tropical depressions Luis and Maymay and the southwest monsoon or habagat, an official said Monday.

The torrential rains that have affected large parts of the country in recent days have so far affected around 223,000 families, according to the OCD.

OCD public information officer Diego Mariano said two of the reported deaths were in Benguet and were reportedly caused by a landslide.

Three fatalities were reported in Rizal, with two allegedly caused by a rockslide and one by a falling tree. Another three deaths were reported in Batangas and were attributed to drowning, electrocution and a landslide.

Nine people were also reported injured—seven in Benguet, one in Rizal and one in Cavite. A person was also reported missing in Batangas.

The affected population was estimated at around 223,000 families, or 752,000 individuals, across Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Cordillera Administrative Region, CALABARZON and MIMAROPA.

As of the latest OCD monitoring, 412 evacuation centers had been activated, sheltering around 10,000 families or 34,400 individuals.

Around 300 houses were reported damaged, including 276 partially damaged and 24 totally damaged.

Meanwhile, agricultural damage was estimated at P3.53 million, while infrastructure damage was placed at P1.12 billion. The OCD did not provide further details on the reported damage.

The agency continues to monitor the situation and validate reports from affected areas.
