MANILA — Six people died and three remained missing after a motor banca carrying 13 passengers capsized in Mapanuepe Lake in San Marcelino, Zambales, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. on Aug. 27 near the Sunken Church in Barangay Buhawen, the PCG said.

Four passengers were rescued and accounted for, while the fatalities included three adults and three minors, it said.

The passengers were reportedly members of the Aeta Indigenous Peoples community from Sitio Lumibao who had visited a community health center to receive food and medicine and participate in a vaccination program before traveling back when the banca capsized.

Initial information indicated that the vessel encountered strong winds and rough water conditions, according to the PCG. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The Coast Guard Station Zambales Disaster Response Group and personnel from Coast Guard Sub-Station San Antonio responded to the incident and coordinated with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, police and other agencies in the search and rescue operation.

Search operations for the three missing passengers were scheduled to resume early Friday, the PCG said.

The Coast Guard said it would continue coordinating with local authorities and other agencies in the search for the missing passengers.
