TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol – The Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC) held its first regional run for 2026 of its “PDIC 101: Understanding Deposit Insurance” media education program in Bohol, highlighting the importance of deposit insurance and public confidence in the banking system.

The Sept. 10 activity, held in Tagbilaran City, was conducted in partnership with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Central Visayas Regional Office and the Bohol Provincial Information Center.

PDIC Vice President Jose G. Villaret Jr. of the Corporate Affairs Group led the discussion and dialogue with Bohol-based reporters from television, radio, print and online media organizations.

The “PDIC 101” is a continuing media education initiative designed to give local journalists a deeper understanding of the Corporation’s mandates and the role of deposit insurance in protecting Filipino depositors and promoting financial stability.

During the session, Villaret discussed the PDIC’s core functions and the enhanced protection provided by the maximum deposit insurance coverage (MDIC) of PHP1 million per depositor, per bank.

The increased MDIC took effect on March 15, 2025, raising the level of deposit protection available to bank depositors.

From March 2025 to March 2026, total deposits across the Philippine banking system increased by 9.81 percent, while deposits with balances above the PHP1 million MDIC posted the strongest growth at 10.32 percent during the same period.

The PDIC said the deposit growth reflected a positive public response to the higher coverage and suggested that the enhanced MDIC may have strengthened confidence not only among fully insured depositors but also among those maintaining larger balances.

The Corporation said the trend ultimately reinforces trust and stability in the banking system.

Aside from providing information, the PDIC 101 gives local journalists an opportunity to raise questions and seek clarifications on the Corporation’s work, helping them provide the public with clearer information on deposit insurance and depositor protection.

The PDIC performs several roles in the financial system, including serving as the state deposit insurer, co-regulator of banks and statutory receiver of closed banks, as well as a pillar of financial stability.

The Corporation also maintains open communication with local media to amplify its messages encouraging the public to save in banks and take advantage of PDIC deposit insurance protection of up to PHP1 million per depositor, per bank.

The PDIC and PIA have been working together since 2024 to expand public access to financial information, particularly on the benefits of saving in banks and the protection provided by deposit insurance.

The partnership also supports the government’s financial inclusion agenda, with PIA’s nationwide network helping the PDIC reach more communities and promote informed financial decisions.

Through consumer education and partnerships with agencies such as the PIA, the PDIC continues to promote depositor protection and public confidence in the country’s financial stability.
