MANILA— President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on teachers to prepare students for the future by developing their critical thinking, discernment and decision-making skills while fostering concern for others.

Speaking at the National Teachers’ Month 2026 celebration at the Manila Hotel, Marcos said the country needs young Filipinos who can eventually lead communities, institutions and the nation with wisdom, competence and empathy.

“We want capable young Filipinos who will one day lead our communities, our institutions, our country; and lead with wisdom, competence, and with empathy,” ani Pangulong Marcos.

The President also cited improvements in the country’s performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), but said more work was needed to strengthen teacher preparation and professional development.

“There are still gaps in how our teachers are prepared and developed. Some are assigned to subjects outside their areas of specialization, while training does not always respond to the realities they face in the classroom,” ani Pangulong Marcos.

Marcos underscored the role of teachers not only as educators but also as guides who help students navigate their development.

As part of efforts to support educators, Marcos launched the My Teacher Education Commons or MyTEC Portal, a digital platform designed to support teachers’ continuing learning and professional development.
