MANILA, Philippines—President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Friday paid tribute to Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, noting the politician’s role in “shaping the nation’s history” as he marked his 101st birthday.
In a message posted on social media, Marcos hailed Enrile as a “statesman, a legal luminary, and an exemplary public servant” whose contributions extend beyond merely witnessing historical events.
“He has not only witnessed history but has actively shaped it,” Marcos said. “In that time, he has amassed a wealth of wisdom and experience, which he generously shares. It is one that all presidents, including myself, have gladly partaken in.”
Enrile, who has served in various key government positions for over half a century, has been a towering figure in Philippine politics. His career spans pivotal moments in the country’s history—from his role as defense minister during the Martial Law years under the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., to his involvement in the 1986 People Power Revolution, and his return to government under the Marcos administration.
Marcos underscored Enrile’s continued service in his administration, describing him as an indispensable adviser whose insights remain crucial in governance.
“Indeed, the fact that his natal day coincides with Valentine’s Day reminds us that the sharpness of his mind is equaled only by the warmth of his heart for the Filipino people,” Marcos added.
The President concluded his message with well wishes for Enrile’s health and longevity, expressing gratitude for his counsel.
“We are truly blessed to have you on our team as our Chief Presidential Legal Counsel,” Marcos said. “Naimbag a Panagkasangay, Tata Johnny!”
