MANILA – Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Monday formally acknowledged the Senate’s decision to elect Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III as the new Senate President, saying he holds no grudges and will continue to serve as an ordinary member of the chamber.
In a manifestation delivered on the Senate floor, Escudero thanked his colleagues for the trust given to him during his leadership in the 19th and 20th Congress.
“I serve at the pleasure, Mr. President, of the majority and understand and respect the decision of the majority of my colleagues. I hold no grudges. I hold no ill feelings,” Escudero said.
He also expressed gratitude to Senate officials and staff, saying it was an honor to serve alongside them.
Escudero congratulated Sotto on his election, adding: “Nandito lamang po ako bilang ordinaryong miyembro para pagsilbihan at paglingkuran kayo sa anumang kapasidad na pwede at kaya ko bilang bahagi ng Senadong ito.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Escudero highlighted the passage of a record number of laws, as well as hearings that unearthed large-scale corruption.
“Accountability is not a mere empty rhetoric but a duty that we must all uphold,” he said.
Escudero also cited specific actions taken under his leadership with the support of House allies, including Congressman Rodante Marcoleta. Among these were allowing Congressman Toby Tiangco to speak freely during hearings, bringing up the names of Speaker Martin Romualdez and Congressman Zaldy Co, and signing a contempt order against Assistant District Engineer Bryce Hernandez, who was placed under Senate detention.
“I am proud of what the Senate has accomplished together, and I trust that the spirit of transparency and courage that have been displayed by this Chamber will be sustained,” Escudero said.
He urged his colleagues to continue pursuing justice and accountability. “Let justice and the rule of law be done and followed ‘though the heavens may fall,’” he added.
