MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has donated fresh vegetables to persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City and the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as a timely intervention for inmates in both facilities.

“This kind gesture is a significant token that demonstrates the administration’s dedication to supporting vulnerable groups, especially those within correctional facilities,” Catapang said.

According to BuCor, the NBP received 126 sacks of assorted vegetables, while the CIW was given 24 sacks. The produce included ampalaya, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, kalabasa, kamote, okra, patola, red onions, repolyo, sayote, sili, sitaw, sweet corn, talong, tomato, upo, white onion, and potatoes.

The deliveries were received by Supt. C/SSUPT. Gary Garcia for the NBP and C/SSUPT Daisy Sevilla-Castillote for the CIW on April 17.

Catapang noted that the assistance came as institutions continue to face pressures linked to global challenges affecting food supply and resources.

“The donation arrived at a critical time as global challenges continue to impact food supply chains and institutional resources,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of proper nutrition for inmates, adding that access to fresh food supports their health and well-being.

Catapang also said the initiative reflects a broader effort by the government to promote inclusivity and provide care to all sectors, including those in detention.

“The donation to the NBP and CIW symbolizes an acknowledgment that even those deprived of liberty merit dignity and proper care while serving their sentences. It also sends a compelling message about the significance of compassion and social responsibility within government programs,” he added.

“These efforts lay the foundation for positive transformation and emphasize the government’s commitment to improving the lives of Filipinos across all sectors,” Catapang said.
